Mango Salsa Covered Eggplants/Alternative Option Mango Salsa Fish

I’m a 90/10 kind of girl…I go 90% hard and 10% notsohard when it comes to my food lifestyle. I like to use the word lifestyle, because sometimes diets can be taken to an extreme and aren’t necessarily healthy. Plus, I want to make good food choices for the sake of my body, not just my weight (which, let’s talk about it, my body just seems to instantly transform a Sunday Funday boozy brunch into an increased booty. *shakes fist at the sky! Thanks for nothing, metabolism!) My 90/10 lifestyle is 90 vegan/veggie/10 fish and also 90/10 when it comes to sugar, gluten, and the like. That’s the balance I’ve found that works for me, and frankly it’s probably made up because who has time for statistics at this point? I sure don’t. My husband, who follows no such stats, has radically altered his meat eating ways since being married to a hippie-dippie earth lover. In part, it’s because I make his meals, but it’s also because he has listened to research about how plant …

Pro-body, Pro-Mind, Pro-health: Probiotics

Researchers and scientists alike agree that we’ve ignored how essential gut health is to our overall health. And guess what our Standard American Diet (SAD) hits the hardest? Our intestines. GMO’s, processed and refined foods strip down the gut of good bacteria, creating an inflammatory reaction that has produced an epidemic of Crohn’s disease, Celiac, and other inflammatory problems as well as causing weight gain. Many of the food inventions of our brave new world are horrible for our bodies. Modern medicine is just too damn smart for its own good, or for our good that is. With all of our wonderful advances through pills, science, and surgeries, we completely ignore holistic health guidelines that have been around for thousands and thousands of years. We seem to think the body incapable of healing itself without the aid of Western medicine. While I don’t think it’s advisable to wholly use natural health alternatives, I think it’s wise to learn what we can and implement simple and yet powerfully effective measures. Remember, just because something is “natural” doesn’t mean …

Healthy “Frosty” Recipe That Doesn’t Suck (Promise)

I really love sweets. Well, and salty foods too, actually. What the heck, full disclosure I love eating. Still, despite the fact that my body constantly thinks it’s in full starvation a la “Naked & Afraid” survival mode, I try to make sure what I consume is going to be fuel for my body. Smoothies are my main goto; I feel like green smoothies are my major food group, like smoothie: it’s what’s for breakfast. And lunch. And probably dinner. I came across a smoothie recipe that defied reality and claimed to be both delicious and healthy. Despite feeling skeptical, I was particularly starved at that moment, what with not having any food for like a whole hour and a half, so I tried it. Surprisingly, it was a really tasty treat, and totally 4pm soothed my sweet tooth monster. It’s also a great post workout refuel treat. Here’s what you need: 3/4 cup (6 ounces) almond milk or coconut milk (if you don’t mind dairy, regular milk works fine) approximately 1 cup of ice (crushed or …

Gluten Free Banana Bread

When I was growing up, I had an obsession with banana bread that I’ve yet to live down with my family. I was a little more than mildly fanatical about it, and since it’s not exactly cake and it’s not really just bread, I would usually try (unsuccessfully) to convince my mother that it was in my best interest to let me eat say…the entire loaf. Kids have had worse aspirations, I guess…right? Regardless, I still just love a thick piece of banana bread with a cup of tea and a good book. That’s a scene from a little corner in my heaven, friends:) Being gluten free, sugar free, preservative free, etc etc etc often feels like it ends up being taste free. Texture is often unpleasant and the final result is a really bad knock off from whatever original recipe from which it was fashioned. I don’t think clean eating has to come at that high of a price, especially when it comes to my gd beloved banana bread, so I experimented with a …
